TRICARE Coverage for Sleep Apnea Treatment
TRICARE covers oral appliance therapy for obstructive sleep apnea. Whether you are active duty, retired, a veteran, or a military dependent, you have access to this comfortable CPAP alternative. Here is how coverage works for each TRICARE plan.
The Bottom Line for Military Families
Active duty service members pay $0 for oral appliance therapy. TRICARE Prime beneficiaries have minimal copays. TRICARE Select and For Life beneficiaries pay cost-shares that are typically lower than commercial insurance. We accept TRICARE at all of our Southern California locations.
Sleep Apnea in the Military Community
Sleep apnea is disproportionately common in the military and veteran population. The combination of physical demands, stress, weight gain during and after service, and blast-related injuries contributes to higher rates of OSA. Studies show that sleep apnea rates among veterans are 3-4 times higher than the general population.
For active duty service members, untreated sleep apnea affects readiness, decision-making, reaction time, and operational performance. Oral appliance therapy is particularly valued in military settings because it requires no electricity, is silent, and is easily deployable — unlike CPAP machines.

The referral process varies depending on your TRICARE plan. We work with TRICARE daily and can guide you through each step.
Talk to Your PCM or Sleep Physician
For TRICARE Prime, start with your primary care manager (PCM). They can order a sleep study and provide a referral for oral appliance therapy. For TRICARE Select, you can self-refer to a TRICARE-authorized provider.
Complete a Sleep Study
A home sleep test or in-lab polysomnography confirms your diagnosis. If your sleep study was done through the military health system, the results transfer to your civilian provider.
Get a Physician Prescription
Your sleep physician or PCM writes a prescription for an oral appliance. We can coordinate with your military or VA physician to obtain this.
Pre-Authorization (if required)
We handle all pre-authorization with TRICARE. We submit your sleep study, referral, and clinical documentation. Most authorizations are processed within 5-10 business days.
Treatment Begins
Once authorized, we schedule your custom fitting. Your oral appliance is fabricated and fitted in 2-3 appointments. Follow-up visits ensure optimal results.
Why OAT Is Preferred for Deployability
Oral appliance therapy is increasingly the treatment of choice for active duty service members with sleep apnea. Unlike CPAP, an oral appliance:
Readiness impact: Untreated sleep apnea affects mission readiness, reaction time, and decision-making under stress. The Department of Defense increasingly recognizes oral appliance therapy as a viable treatment option that maintains deployability — unlike CPAP, which can affect medical readiness classification.
